The Wonder

By the time ‘Contact’, the blockbuster movie, hit the screens in 1997 I was already gripped by my growing interest in space and sound. Always a deep listener, I resonated with the character Dr Arroway, a radio astronomer and SETI scientist, played by Jodie Foster. Inspired then by British particle physicist Professor Brian Cox, I marveled in awe at the wonder of all that is around us.

Experience a powerful shift in perspective!

View the Milky Way at 10 million light years from the Earth. Then move through space towards the Earth in successive orders of magnitude until you reach a tall oak tree just outside Florida. After that, begin to move from the actual size of a leaf into a microscopic world that reveals leaf cell walls, the cell nucleus, chromatin, DNA and finally, into the subatomic universe of electrons and protons!

Interstellar

But the biggest and deepest impact, in terms of my interest in the Quantum field, was to arrive in the form of “Interstellar,” released in 2014.

One of the reasons Interstellar is so beloved is because of its scientific accuracy. The idea of time dilation due to gravity on the behemoth planet, wormholes, and even the black hole shown, was far ahead of its time. Moreover, it moved me so because it spoke to the subject of communication through time and space. Where the enduring love between father and daughter enables them to connect inter-dimensionally via a watch, solving the gravity equation that ultimately saves humanity. In so doing, there’s the fulfilment of his fatherly promise that,

“I love you, forever. I’m coming back.”

And he does. I myself have experienced communication from my own father, from beyond the physical life.

Transcending Time

“Love is the one thing that we’re capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space”

… said Interstellar Astronaut and Founder of IONS, Edgar Mitchell. He also said …

“When I went to the moon I was a pragmatic test pilot. But when I saw the planet Earth floating in the vastness of space, the presence of divinity became almost palpable and I knew that life in the universe was not just an accident.”

This is precisely how I felt about my own “accident,” the catastrophic car collision I’d had in 1996. As I witnessed the scene of carnage from above, from a place of space, unfolding “beneath and below” me, “out-of-body” as it were, there was indeed this presence holding everything with comfort, with care … closer than anything in this world.

Divine Intelligence

Science, in my experience, has this capacity to shift one’s perspective to a whole new paradigm, to that of Spirituality and into what I term the Divine Intelligence, far beyond the limitations and inadequacies of the mind, of conventional reality, and the realm of the “known.”

Here’s what Edgar says about that,

“Instead of an intellectual search, there was suddenly a very deep gut feeling that something was different. It occurred when looking at Earth and seeing this blue-and-white planet floating there, and knowing it was orbiting the Sun, seeing that Sun, seeing it set in the background of the very deep black and velvety cosmos, seeing – rather, knowing for sure – that there was a purposefulness of flow, of energy, of time, of space in the cosmos – that it was beyond man’s rational ability to understand, that suddenly there was a nonrational way of understanding that had been beyond my previous experience. There seems to be more to the universe than random, chaotic, purposeless movement of a collection of molecular particles. On the return trip home, gazing through 240,000 miles of space toward the stars and the planet from which I had come, I suddenly experienced the universe as intelligent, loving, harmonious.”
